How tarot cards were invented

Tarot grew out of the Italian card game 'tarocchi', documented in the 1460s–1470s — a luxury luxury deck for nobles before it ever carried an esoteric whisper. The esoteric layer arrived in the 1780s when French occultists assigned meanings and published systems. So the cards predate the 'fortune-telling' reputation by roughly three centuries.
