How to Read Tarot Cards: Beginner's Complete Walkthrough
Learn how to read tarot cards step by step: card anatomy, first spreads, reversals, and practice routines that stick.
Week 1: meet the 22 Majors
Lay out 22 Major cards and describe each out loud in one sentence without looking anything up. You already know most archetypes from stories: Fool = leap, Tower = collapse, Star = hope. Compare with MysticTarot's meanings pages and correct what you missed.
Weeks 2–3: one-card pulls, then suits
Each morning: one question, one card, three written sentences. By the weekend a vocabulary forms — Suns repeat on good days, Swords on worried ones. Then add the four suits by mapping them to career (Wands), love (Cups), thought (Swords) and money (Pentacles).
Week 4: your first 5-card spread
Use the classic Past–Present–Hidden–Advice–Outcome spread and read left to right like a sentence. Notice how a reversed card in a Hidden position hits differently than upright in the Outcome — positional awareness is what separates a reading from card-listing.
You now read tarot. What remains is practice, and MysticTarot's three daily free readings cost nothing.
Put it to the test
