Demonic, Witchcraft, or Neither? Tarot & The Truth

Are tarot cards demonic, satanic or witchcraft? What the imagery actually is and why the fear has no basis.

Where the imagery really comes from

Tarot artwork borrows from Renaissance Christian allegory, astrology and court playing cards. The Devil card is a moral warning about attachment — literally drawn from Christian tradition — and The Tower echoes the Babel story. Nothing in the deck is a summoning.

The 'witchcraft' label attaches to tarot because fictional witches also use cards. Real decks predate modern Wicca by centuries and have no ritual requirement: no invocation, circle or candle is needed to shuffle.

What actually happens in a reading

Ask a question, shuffle, pull cards, interpret. That's the entire 'ritual' — the same steps as drawing an inspiration card at a bookshop. No spirit, portal or invitation is involved, because the operation is symbol selection, not contact with entities.

Fear of portals and bad spirits usually comes from mixing two different hobbies: tarot and occult role-play. They can coexist, but nothing in tarot requires the second one. Cards don't carry evil; they carry pictures.
